Processing LiDAR Data: Starting a New Project


Processing LiDAR data is an essential step in turning your point cloud into meaningful geospatial deliverables. The ROCK Cloud offers a comprehensive platform for processing, analyzing, and sharing LiDAR data. In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of creating a project in the ROCK Cloud.

Introduction to ROCK Cloud

  • Log in to your ROCK Cloud account to begin.
  • The navigation menu on the left hand side of your ROCK Cloud account screen provides access to various destinations such as your projects, the Rock Network, Rock Stars, the ROCK Marketplace, the ROCK Community and the online ROCK Academy.

Creating a New Project

  1. Click the "Start Your Project" button to begin.
  2. Enter the project information name, description, location (latitude and longitude).This description is vital for communicating project details to team members or clients.
  3. Define the coordinate reference system (CRS) for your uploaded point cloud data using the populated suggestion.
  4. Reproject the data based the the desired final projection for your project.
  5. Upload LiDAR point cloud data files and trajectory files to the project. Note that if the data is uploaded from ROCK Desktop, the project data and trajectory are automatically added. You can also add orthomosiacs and photos to the project.
  6. Upload GCPs manually or via a CSV (comma-separated values) file. Specify GCP details, including X, Y, Z coordinates, and title. Set the GCP projection to match the projection the GCPs were collected in.
  7. Ensure that the trajectory and GCPs align correctly with the LiDAR data. Perform any point cloud editing, measurements or classification, etc desired.
  8. Once you verify your project is complete, order the desired deliverables


Visualizing & Verifying Data

  • You can check the status bar at the bottom of the ROCK Cloud visualizer for messages about data visualization and processing updates. This status bar also provides a history of actions performed on the dataset.
  • You can also inspect your point cloud data to ensure alignment, coverage and accuracy in the ROCK Cloud visualizer after you have finalized your project.


Communicating Results

  • The ROCK Cloud allows you to easily share data sets and project information internally or with clients
  • Utilize the community section to engage with other users, ask questions, and gather feedback.
